Yoga is a very scientific system by which man is able to transform
his state of consciousness. The same mind which suffers from pain,
is alsocapable of experiencing pleasure. Happiness and misery
are both expressions of the human mind in different states.
Yoga
is not a recipe for less suffering , though it can offerus help
in changing our attitude so that we have less avidya and therefore
greater freedom from pain ( Dukha). We can understand the whole
practice of yoga as a process of examining our habitual attitudes
and behaviours and their consequences.
Patanjali’syoga
is generally termed the Ashtanga yoga or the eight limbs of yoga.
These eight limbs are
-
Yamas (Social code of conduct / Absolute restraints)
-
Niyamas ( Personal code of conduct/ Relative restraints)
-
Asana (Posture, states of being)
-
Pranayama ( Control of prana, the regulation of the vital
force)
-
Pratyahara ( Withdrawal of the senses)
-
Dharana (concentration)
-
Dhayana (Meditaion)
-
Samadhi ( super conscious state or trance)
These
eight limbs have been scientifically arranged and deals with.
The first five practices are called Bahirang (external) yoga and
the last three are antaranga ( internal) yoga. They are the natural
steps in the ladder which takes man from his human to the real
divine nature. From the gross to the subtle, all the chords that
bind the Purusha and Prakriti are cut asunder. This snapping of
the ties releases to Purusha to enjoy his independence ,Kaivalya
moksha. This is the goal of Raja Yoga.
